The Power of Prayer

KEY PASSAGES

1 It was the first year of the reign of Darius the Mede, the son of Ahasuerus, who became king of the Babylonians. 2 During the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, learned from reading the word of the Lord, as revealed to Jeremiah the prophet, that Jerusalem must lie desolate for seventy years. 3 So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and fasting. I also wore rough burlap and sprinkled myself with ashes.

– DANIEL 9:1-3

10 Just then a hand touched me and lifted me, still trembling, to my hands and knees. 11 And the man said to me, “Daniel, you are very precious to God, so listen carefully to what I have to say to you. Stand up, for I have been sent to you.” When he said this to me, I stood up, still trembling. 12 Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to PRAY for UNDERSTANDING and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer.

– DANIEL 10:1-12
  1. PRAY FOR UNDERSTANDING

1 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

– GENESIS 3:1

8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man[a] and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

– GENESIS 3:8-9

26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.

– ROMANS 8:26-27

18 Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.

PSALM 119:18
  1. PRAY IN HUMILITY

12 Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God,

– DANIEL 10:12

4 I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed: “O Lord, you are a great and awesome God! You always fulfill your covenant and keep your promises of unfailing love to those who love you and obey your commands.

– DANIEL 9:4

5 But we have sinned and done wrong. We have rebelled against you and scorned your commands and regulations. 6 We have refused to listen to your servants the prophets, who spoke on your authority to our kings and princes and ancestors and to all the people of the land.

– DANIEL 9:5
  1. PRAY WITH RIGHT REQUEST

12 Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer.

DANIEL 10:12

13 But for twenty-one days the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way. Then Michael, one of the archangels, came to help me, and I left him there with the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia.

– DANIEL 10:13

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places.

– EPHESIANS 6:12

18 “O my God, lean down and listen to me. Open your eyes and see our despair. See how your city—the city that bears your name—lies in ruins. We make this plea, not because we deserve help, but because of your mercy. 19 “O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive. O Lord, listen and act! For your own sake, do not delay, O my God, for your people and your city bear your name.”

– DANIEL 9:18-19

THIS WEEK’S ACTIVATION:

ART OF A POWERFUL PRAYER

READ: DANIEL 9:1-3

  1. PRAY FOR UNDERSTANDING

READ – DANIEL 10:10-12, GENESIS 3:1, GENESIS 3:8-9, ROMANS 8:26-27, PSALM 119:18

ASK: Do I pray? When I pray, do I seek to understand God or to only tell God my needs?

  1. PRAY WITH HUMILITY

READ – DANIEL 10:12, DANIEL 9:4, DANIEL 9:5-6

ASK: Am I acknowledging the supremacy of God’s goodness, power and strength in my life? Have I thanked God for who He is lately? Do I need to repent for asking you to do things my way when I do pray?

  1. PRAY WITH RIGHT REQUEST

READ – DANIEL 10:12-13, EPHESIANS 6:12, DANIEL 9:18-19

ASK: Am I asking God to move in power according to His word and how I see things?

PRAY: God, thank you for always being on the move in my life. Thank you for always pursuing me to bring about what is best for me. I repent for taking control and not letting you move according to what pleases you. Come now, by the power of your Holy Spirit and deliver me from the plans of the devil to see me confused, frustrated and lonely. You are a good God who is moving with mercy. I may not see it but I trust you. Amen!
